I think your unidentified bird is probably a chiffchaff.

Not a great photo. I keep going out with the lens I use in museums, which is quite simply unsuitable for distance shots.

I hadn't thought of a chiffchaff. I was toying with the idea of a garden warbler, not that I've ever seen one in real life.

It drew my attention by the sheer volume of its singing. Thanks again for your help.

If the song was at all varied, then willow warbler (or perhaps garden warbler) is more likely. Chiffchaffs have a very repetitive two-tone song that they're named after. But both garden warbler and willow warbler are supposed to be summer migrants, and it's a bit early.
