Introduction

This blog is a photographic and historical record of the area in which I live in southeast London, U.K..

Although the area has been considerably developed since the Surrey Commercial Docks closed in 1969, traces of a commercial dockland heritage can still be found in Rotherhithe.

Parts of the area have also been turned into parks where wildlife has been allowed to develop. I live between the parks and Greenland Dock, which connects via a lock to the Thames. The dock and the ponds in woodland parks are full of fish and well used by both freshwater and sea birds. The woodland and ecological park are full of wildlife including birds, animals, insects and a huge variety of plants. Some of them are rare and are monitored by local conservation groups.

As with many of these urban oases the area suffers stresses - social, environmental and political. Plans to develop areas of the Rotherhithe peninsula offer a potential threat to the ecological stability of the area, teenagers run antisocially rampant in the summer months (often uncontrolled by either parents or the local authorities), and it is always a communal challenge to ensure that facilities and services within the area are maintained to the required standards.

This is just a bit of fun, but I want the photographs to reflect the date each post, so the photographs will never be more than a week old and they will show both good and bad aspects of life in Greenland Dock and in the Russia Dock Woodland.

The heritage post focus on the past of the area from prehistoric times onwards. I hope that these will be of interest to anyone who shares my interest in the evolution of Rotherhithe. Just click on the Heritage label to see the heritage posts exclusively.

Depending on where I am and what I'm up to the posts may become somewhat sporadic.
